Vian boys place third, Lady Wolverines seventh at Warner Eagle Classic after suffering road losses to Central
By David Seeley Sports Editor

WARNER — The Vian Wolverines won the third-place game of the 2025 Warner Eagle Classic with a comefrom- behind 48-35 win over the Wilburton Diggers on Saturday evening at Warner Event Center.

The Wolverines opened the tournament with a 62-46 win over the McCurtain Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon at Warner Event Center but lost a heartbreaking 42-41 semifinal game to the Davis Wolves on Friday night at Warner Event Center.

While there was no tournament hardware to be presented, the Vian Lady Wolverines also won a trophy game as they defeated the Haskell Lady Haymakers 53-48 in Saturday morning’s seventh-place game at Warner Event Center.

The win capped a disappointing start to the tournament for the Lady Wolverines as they opened with a 57-25 loss to the host Warner Lady Eagles in the opening round Thursday night at Warner Event Center before losing in the consolation semifinals 42-32 to the Wilburton Lady Diggers on Friday night at Ronnie Hales Gym.

Last week began with a pair of Big 8 Conference road games at Central on Jan. 21, with the Wolverines losing 58-44 to the Tigers after the Lady Tigers tamed the Lady Wolverines 52-13.

In the boys’ thirdplace game, the Wolverines (8-7) trailed 23-20 at halftime, but outscored the Diggers 13-6 in the third quarter to take the lead for good at 33-29 entering the final period. A 15-6 fourth quarter sealed the deal.

For the game, Masyn Wright led all scorers with a game-high 23 points for Vian, followed by Joe O’Neal with 12 points, Trace Sanders with eight points and Cash Trammel with five points.

In the boys’ championship semifinals, a free throw by Jacob Brannick with seven seconds left in regulation gave the Wolverines a 41-40 lead. The Wolves came down across half court, and called timeout. The inbounds pass was a lob into big man Wyatt Fielding, who caught the ball and made the short jumper with two seconds left. Time ran out before the Wolverines could get the ball inbounds, preventing them a shot at avenging the Wolves for knocking them off in the Class 2A Division II state title game last month.

In defeat, Wright scored a game-high 26 points to lead Vian, followed by Trammel with six points, O’Neal with four points, Brannick with three points and Sanders with two points.

In the boys’ openinground contest, the Wolverines led 15-7 after a period en route to a 2717 halftime advantage and a 43-29 lead going into the fourth quarter.

For the game, O’Neal led Vian with 23 points, followed by Trammel and Ethan Bullock with 11 points each, Sanders with seven points, Wright with six points and Brannick with four points.

In the girls’ seventhplace game, the Lady Wolverines (3-12) rallied from a 29-19 halftime deficit by outscoring the Haymakers 22-5 in the third quarter to take a 41-34 lead into the final period.

For the game, Vian put a trio of players into double figures, led by Shelbie Glass with 15 points, followed by Rayleigh Terrill with 13 points and Halli Russell with 10 points. Aliyah Tucker scored six points, followed by Kala Gibbins with four points, Eden Girty with three points and Kiah Richardson with two points.

In the girls’ consolation semifinals, the Lady Wolverines had a 2219 lead about midway through the third quarter, only to see the Lady Diggers score the period’s final eight points to take a 27-22 lead into the fourth quarter. After the Lady Diggers got their lead to as high as nine points at 32-23 with 6:50 left to play in the game, the Lady Wolverines cut the deficit to eight points four times — with the last time coming at 40-32 on a basket by Russell with 34 seconds left to play in the game, but Vian got no closer.

In defeat, Russell scored a game-high 18 points to lead Vian, followed by Richardson with six points, Glass with five points and Blazi Dieter with two points.

In the girls’ openinground contest, the Lady Eagles flew out to a 12-2 lead en route to a 21-12 first-quarter advantage. An 11-4 second period upped Warner’s advantage to 32-16 at halftime en route to a 50-19 lead going into the fourth quarter — which saw a running clock instituted.

In defeat, Russell and Tucker each scored five points to lead Vian, followed by Richardson and Terrill with four points each, Tina Rautenberg with three points and Girty and Glass with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Central, the Tigers virtually led all the way, taking an 18-15 lead after the first quarter en route to a 35-25 halftime advantage and a 50-34 lead after three periods. The Wolverines (1-2 in Big 8 Conference play) tried to mount a rally in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 10-8 over the final eight minutes but coming up short.

In defeat, O’Neal scored a game-high 18 points and Wright added 17 points to lead Vian, followed by Jeremiah Marshall with five points and Sanders with four points.

In the girls’ loss to Central, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 14-3 lead after a quarter, which became a 27-6 halftime advantage and a 40-11 lead entering the final period.

In defeat, Glass led the Lady Wolverines (1-2 in Big 8 Conference play) with four points, followed by Rebel Simon with three points and Richardson, Terrill and Tucker with two points apiece.
