Soul Sick
By Pastor Michael Martin Vian Baptist Church

Psalms 43:5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

“Soul sick” describes a state of profound emotional or spiritual distress, often characterized by feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, and a sense of disconnection. It’s not a formal medical diagnosis but rather a way to describe a deep-seated feeling of unease and dissatisfaction that can manifest in various ways, including physical symptoms. (copied) In our world today, doctors diagnose more new illnesses every year that deal with the mental, physical, or spiritual condition people are finding themselves in. It is more of a situation than it is a disease. I know I am making some people mad that I might try to spiritualize their mental or physical problems, but hear me out, please.

First, if God created man, we still have a connection with our Maker. We might not acknowledge it and that is the beginning of our “soul sickness”. This past week I visited Patriot’s Landing in Williamstown, Kentucky where veterans build things to support veteran health. I bought a wooden flag with 22 caliber shells for stars. It represents the over 22 suicides a day in our veteran community. On the back of each flag is the name and signature of the veteran that made the flag. I took the flag from Kentucky back to Oklahoma, yet it is still attached to its maker. Pam Pananski AG2 USN signed her work. God signs His work as well.

Our DNA is His signature. Scientists argue about God in our DNA and the idea that the complexity and intricate design of DNA point to a divine creator, or that there’s a spiritual or mystical connection to our genetic code. Some people interpret the structure and function of DNA as evidence of intelligent design. They should!

Even if the complexity of DNA could be explained by Evolution (which to me is pretty far fetched), we still have mental, physical, and spiritual problems to deal with. Scientists (Evolutionary Scientists) make it their lot in life to throw out our miraculous body and how it functions in favor of some (idiotic) idea that we somehow formed ourselves. Have you ever thought of our sight organs? The human eye has several key parts that work together to enable vision. These include the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, optic nerve, and vitreous humor. Additionally, the eye contains chambers filled with fluid (aqueous and vitreous humor) and is covered by a thin membrane called the conjunctiva. Evolved? Really?

Have you ever heard of the Infinite Monkey Theorem? The phrase “billions of monkeys typing” refers to the thought experiment known as the Infinite Monkey Theorem. This theorem suggests that given enough time and an infinite number of monkeys typing randomly on typewriters, they would eventually produce any given text, including the complete works of William Shakespeare.

When I read this, I cracked up laughing! Science (falsely so called), would rather believe in anything instead of a Creator God who designed us. God speaks of this in warning. Unlimited monkeys on unlimited typewriters typing nonsense for billions of years can produce the works of Shakespeare?! What a hoot!

1Timothy 6:20 “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:” The sickness of the soul is a condition that doctors try to medicate today. Back in the early 70’s doctors had scream rooms and padded rooms as a solution to soul sickness. People were encouraged to get in a scream room and scream themselves hoarse trying to rid themselves of anger, rage, and violence. The padded rooms were for aggression and the need to punch things that angered them. That is a hoot as well!

Folks, God and God only can give you peace in your soul. God and God only can revive you from depression, guilt, and despair. God made us. We are His creation. He can fix anything that is broken.

The Historical King of Israel knew this. David knew this. Let’s close with our text again. See how it is worded. Health comes from God.

Psalms 43:5 “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
