Gore Pirates go 3-1 during Spring Break week
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Gore Pirates baseball team went 3-1 during Spring Break week.

After having their home game on March 16 against Porum canceled due to cold weather, the Pirates got the week going with a 13-5 five-inning, run-rule road victory over Riverside Conference foe Okay on March 17.

At the Pioneer Festival last Thursday and Friday at Pioneer High School located southeast of Enid, the Pirates went 2-1 — getting a four-inning, run-rule 9-1 win over Shattuck on Thursday and a 3-0 victory over Pond Creek-Hunter on Friday.

The lone loss last week was a 2-0 setback against the host Pioneer Mustangs on Thursday.

In the win over Okay, the Pirates (5-2) scored once in the first inning and three runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, an advantage they would never relinquish. A seven-run fifth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, James Brasuell was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, two runs batted in and two runs scored, Cruz Ward was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Keeton Rowe was 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI, Tate Brooksher was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, Kason Short was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Kyler McGee was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Eli Munson was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for Gore.

Brasuell (2-0) got the win, going the first two innings with five strikeouts. Gage Dame went the next 1.1 innings with a strikeout, then Brooksher went the final 1.2 innings with five Ks.

In the victory over Shattuck, Brooksher (20) got the four-inning, complete-game victory as he struck out nine batters and scattered three hits.

After falling behind the Indians 1-0 in the first inning, the Pirates scored twice in the first inning, five runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning to put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Munson was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored, McGee doubled with an RBI and a run scored, Brooksher doubled with two RBIs and Wyatt Willard-Smith doubled with two RBIs and a run scored for Gore.

In Thursday’s loss to host Pioneer, the Pirates were five-hit by Mustangs’ pitching. Pioneer scored singled runs in the third and fifth inning.

In defeat, Brooksher was 2-for-3 with a double for Gore.

McKennon McElhaney (0-1) suffered the loss, despite fanning four batters in 4.1 innings. Jesse Reeves went the final 1.2 innings with a strikeout.

In Friday’s victory over Pond Creek-Hunter, the Pirates got a one-hitter from the combination of Brasuell and Reeves. Brasuell got the win, going the first five innings with seven strikeouts and allowing no hits or runs. Reeves went the final two innings with two strikeouts.

The Pirates broke a scoreless tie with a run in the second inning, then got two insurance runs in the fifth inning.

For the game, Brasuell and Brooksher each doubled, while Rowe tripled for Gore.
