Webbers Falls Warriors finish runners-up in own tournament; pitching combos no-hit Gans, Midway
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Webbers Falls Warriors baseball team finished runners-up in its own tournament, which took place last Thursday through Saturday at Eual Carter Sports Complex.

The Warriors lost the title game 20-12 on Saturday night after they won their first three tournament games — 9-1 in four innings over Porter Consolidated and 14-1 in three innings over Gans on Thursday before holding off Quinton 8-7 on Friday.

The Warriors opened last week’s action by losing 14-0 in three innings to Gore on March 23 at home before routing the Midway Chargers 16-1 in three innings at home March 24.

In the tournament title game loss, the Chieftains build a 19-3 lead by the fourth inning, only to see the Warriors (7-5) score nine runs in the fifth inning to cut their deficit to 19-12. However, the Warriors got no closer.

In defeat, T.J. Morgan was 3-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored, Trysten Wilbourn doubled with three RBIs and a run scored and Caden McNamara hit his first home run of the season with three RBIs and two runs scored for Webbers Falls.

Hayden Stephens (0-2) took the loss, lasting only an inning-plus with three strikeouts. Wilbourn went the next 2.2 innings with two strikeouts, then Thadan Yandell got the next out. Morgan got the following out by strikeout, then Cason Newcomer went the final 2.2 innings with three Ks.

In the tournament win over Porter Consolidated, Brutus Robinson (3-0) threw a four-inning one-hitter with three strikeouts.

All the run support Robinson needed came in the first inning as the Warriors scored twice for a 2-0 lead. After the Pirates cut their deficit to 2-1 in the second inning, the Warriors put the game into run-rule status with a two-run second inning and a five-run fourth inning.

For the contest, Gunner Shelby was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Rocky Greenfield was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Webbers Falls.

In the tournament victory over Gans, after the Grizzlies scored their lone run in the top of the first inning, the Warriors responded with a ninerun first inning and a five-run second inning to put the game into runrule status.

For the contest, Morgan was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Clayton Roberts was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored and Yandell doubled and scored twice for Webbers Falls.

Robinson got the win, going the first 2.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Brock Rhoden got the final out on a strikeout. The duo of Robinson and Rhoden combined to nohit the Grizzlies.

In the tournament win over Quinton, the Warriors broke a 5-all tie with a three-run fifth inning.

For the game, Robinson was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Yandell doubled with two RBIs for Webbers Falls.

Shelby (3-0) got the complete five-inning game victory with four strikeouts.

In the victory over Midway, Robinson and Yandell combined to nohit the Chargers. Robinson got his first win of the season, going two innings with four strikeouts, then Yandell pitched a scoreless third inning.

The Warriors put away the game with a nine-run first inning. A seven-run second inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the game, Shelby doubled with two runs batted in and a run scored.

In the loss to Gore, Gore pitcher Gage Dame threw a three-inning twohitter with five strikeouts.

The Pirates put away the game early with a sixrun first inning, A sevenrun second inning and a run in the third inning put the game into runrule status.

In defeat, Shelby and Stephens each singled for the Warriors.

Stephens suffered the loss, only going 1.1 innings. Morgan got the final two outs of the second inning, then Shelby pitched the third inning, striking out the side.
