To me teaching is a calling as well as a career. I am so proud that I became a teacher and that two of my three children (Shannon and Cory Lynn) are teachers. It’s still sort of a miracle to me that we get to do what we are gifted to do and love to do, and we get paid for it. Some preacher friends of ours, Bobby Smith and Dave Kelley, tell of the days when they would do meetings together and be given maybe $20 each. They would rejoice on the way home for what God had done that night, but also they were thinking, “Wow, we get to sing and preach God’s Word, and then they give us a love offering, too!” That describes a calling, not a career. Nothing wrong with a career or getting paid well, but if you go into preaching or teaching, for that matter, without a calling you may be disappointed and disgruntled.
