The town of Webbers Falls will remember the 14 people who died on May 26, 2002, after a section of the U.S. Interstate-40 bridge collapsed. The tragedy happened when a captain of a towboat experienced a fainting spell, causing the barges he was controlling to collide with a bridge pier, resulting in a section of the bridge to plunge into the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir on the Arkansas River. The town and former mayor, Jewell Horne, will hold a memorial at 10 a.m. May 30, in Webbers Falls for the 20-year anniversary. The event will include special speakers, including witnesses and family members of the survivors, along with music and a reception honoring those who lost their lives.
