The Safe Path
By Pastor Michael Martin,

Psalms 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. “

There is an age old story about a boy walking on a path late at night. He had a lantern in his hand and walked on the path safely. But he became aware of fire-flies dancing in the night just over to the side of Vian the path. The farther he walked the Baptist more he saw. He forgot his lantern Church and walked toward the dancing ____________ lights somehow thinking they would lead him somewhere wonderful. He put out his lantern so he could see the little dancing lights better.

It wasn’t too long before he fell into a deep ditch. Then he bitterly blamed the fire-flies for leading him astray. His mind finally settled on the fact that he had been safe while relying on his lantern. He also noted it was his decision to follow the dancing lights.

As he finally climbed out of the ditch and relit his lantern, he had to admit, it wasn’t the fault of the fire-flies. It was his own fault for not using his lantern to follow the safe path.

For many years, our country followed the light of Scripture to guide it and for years our Nation prospered greatly. What started as a huddled group of men and women trying desperately to stay alive until spring, became a Nation spanning 2892 miles coast to coast. It is also 1650 miles north to south and that isn’t counting Alaska and Hawaii.

For years our country grew. Our initial laws were from God laws found in scripture. God taught man how to live in peace with his fellow man. As long as the United States abided by those laws, God was able to bless our Nation. Our Nation prospered more than all others until we were the only super power in the world.

In 1837, our National debt was so small that Andrew Jackson was able to pay it off. Today for each man, woman and child living in the U.S., owes $31,459,077,499,143. This equates to: $94,064 for every person living in the U.S.

What happened? Why isn’t God continuing to bless? Our Nation’s leaders have stopped following the lantern and are chasing fire-flies. Our Nation became reliant on the government instead of being reliant on God. I could give you hundreds of instances of our forefather’s reliance on God to survive. History is full of them. The very best scene of the Revolutionary War was George Washington at Valley Forge kneeling in the snow praying to His Heavenly Father for help and wisdom to separate from a corrupt government and religious system and to found one that relied on God, totally and completely.

If I traced our history through all the years from then to now, you would see some very foolish legislation, allowing all sorts of ungodly practices to grow in our country. Do we really expect God to bless this nation of sin and corruption? They threw God out of the school system! How are schools doing now? They have tried to ban Him from every sporting event. Isn’t it odd when we see all the corrupt sports figures whining about their lot in life, especially the women.

Do I want to go back in history? Absolutely! I want to go back to the days when we didn’t have to worry about our children playing outside. I want to go back to a time before “Stranger Danger”. I want to go back to a time when we didn’t have to “Just say No to drugs”. I want to go back to a time when we revered life, back when people were excited about being pregnant. My mother’s aunt had 17 children and as she tells it, it was a joy to go to their house. The big dining room table always had room for more people. Visitors were cherished.

Do I want to go back to the days when people followed the Bible and “loved their neighbor as theirself”? Yes, I do! Now days, you can live in a city and not know your next door neighbors. The days of everyone coming out to the front porch after dinner to talk to neighbors across the street or on either side of you are gone.

The only hope to restore our nation is in Revival of Interest in God. Will that happen? With the church so effected by apathy, I doubt it. Prove me wrong! Please! Prove me wrong!
