School board discusses new high school project, contracts
By AMIE CATO-REMER Editor,

In a regular meeting held on July 10, the Vian Public Schools Board of Education addressed several important matters, including updates on the new high school project, financial approvals, policy changes, and contracts for various school personnel.

The meeting commenced with the superintendent’s report, in which Superintendent John Brockman and Travis Beshears with Beshears Construction Inc. provided an update on the progress of the new high school project. This project is expected to bring significant improvements to the educational facilities in the district and is being closely monitored by the board.

The board then moved on to the business agenda, where they considered and approved various items for the 2023-24 school year:

• Encumbrance numbers for the General Funds and Building Fund. No changes were made to the Building Bond Fund or Sinking Fund

• District salary schedule and changes to the school year calendar

• Handbooks for the elementary, middle school and high school

• Changes to various policies, including those related to school nurse Amber Spyres’ recommendations, the attendance policy, transgender and nonbinary students policy, and the discipline policy, which now includes authorization for the use of corporal punishment.

• Edmentum Agreement and Renaissance Agreement

• 2024 Assurances and LEA Agreement

• The use of Armstrong Bank purchasing cards

• Jessica McKinney and Shannon Tucker were approved as adjunct instructors for academic credit in Anatomy through Muskogee ICTC.

Following regular business, the board convened for an executive session to discuss various employment-related matters and the purchase and appraisal of real property.

Upon returning to open session, the board made the following decisions: • Contracts for Erica King (treasurer/payroll/ HR), Shannon Pack (encumbrance clerk/federal programs), and Christie Mendenhall (activity fund custodian/superintendent’s secretary)

• Contracts for Kathy Wingo (elementary principal), Jennifer Ecker (assistant elementary principal), Marilyn Oliver (middle school principal), and Carrie Jo Willis (high school principal)

• Changes to the superintendent’s contract

• Extra duty assignments for the upcoming school year.

This news story is based on the unofficial minutes from the board meeting and could be in error if the minutes are changed prior to adoption.
