Vian Lady Wolverines capture Class 3A Regional Tourney after losing regular-season finale to Eufaula

There will be some more softball this week for the Vian Lady Wolverines, thanks to them winning last week’s Class 3A Regional Tournament at Lincoln Christian High School in Tulsa after losing their regular-season finale at Eufaula on Sept. 18.

The Lady Wolverines went through the regional tournament undefeated after defeating regional-host Lincoln Christian 7-5 in last Wednesday’s regional final after beating the Lady Bulldogs 9-2 and the Atoka Lady Wampus Cats 17-4 on Sept. 19.

The Lady Wolverines (23-7) will play in this week’s Class 3A Super Regional Tournament (formerly known as the regional tournament), which will begin Thursday. The site and match-up for the Class 3A Super Regional were not made known by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association by press time.

In the regional championship game, the Lady Wolverines had to rally from a 4-0 first-inning deficit and a 5-3 thirdinning deficit to get the win as Vian scored once in the fourth inning, twice in the fifth inning and once in the seventh inning to get the come-from-behind win.

For the game, LaKaila Drew was 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in, Maisie Wells was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, Skyelar Locust was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI and Akeelah Truett doubled and scored once.

Kala Gibbins (21-6) got the win, getting five strikeouts in seven innings.

In the win over Atoka, the Lady Wolverines scored three runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead.

After the Lady Wampus Cats cut their deficit rot 3-1 after an inning, the Lady Wolverines scored twice in the second and fourth innings for a 7-1 lead. A fiverun sixth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the game, Gibbins was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and a run scored, Locust was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI, Wells was 2-for-3 with two doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored, Halli Russell was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, Hanna Mattingly doubled with two RBIs and Rebel Simon doubled two runs scored.

Gibbins got the win, striking out three batters in six innings.

In the victory over Lincoln Christian, the Lady Wolverines scored once in the opening inning and four runs in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead.

After Lincoln Christian scored twice in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2, Vian put away the game with a four-run sixth inning.

For the game, Drew was 5-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Wells was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Gibbins was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, Truett was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, Locust was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Mattingly was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored and Simon doubled.

Gibbins got the pitching victory, fanning five batters in seven innings.

The Lady Wolverines lost their regular-season finale 9-1 to the host Lady Ironheads.

After Mattingly’s RBI double scored Wells for a 1-0 lead for the Lady Wolverines, the Lady Ironheads scored three runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning for a 7-1 lead after two innings. A two-run fourth inning put the game into runrule status.

In defeat, Mattingly was 2-for-2 with an RBI double, Wells doubled and scored once and Russell singled for Vian. Gibbins suffered the loss, despite recording four strikeouts in four innings.
