After road wins over Checotah, FG, Vian Lady Wolverines suffer sweep at hands of Lindsay Leopardettes

In super regional to see season end

After the Vian Lady Wolverines got a pair of road tune-up wins over the Checotah Lady Wildcats by a score of 3-2 in eight innings on Sept. 25 and a 7-5 victory over the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers on Sept. 26, they saw their season end on Thursday afternoon with a pair of losses to the host Lindsay Leopardettes by scores of 3-0 and 5-2 in the Class 3A Super Regional Tournament.

The Lady Wolverines end their season with a record of 25-9.

In the road regularseason win over Checotah, the Lady Wolverines broke a 2-all tie in the eighth inning on a one-out RBI double by LaKaila Drew that scored Kala Gibbins with the game-winning run.

For the game, Drew was 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI double, Gibbins doubled and scored once and Skyelar Locust doubled and scored once.

Gibbins (23-8) got the win. striking out nine batters in eight innings.

In the road regularseason victory over Fort Gibson, the Lady Wolverines broke a scoreless tie with a three-run second inning as Locust’s two-run double and Gibbins’ sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

After the Lady Tigers scored once in the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1 after two innings, the Lady Wolverines got that run back in the fourth inning on Drew’s two-out RBI single for a 4-1 lead. Fort Gibson cut its deficit to 4-3 after four innings.

After Fort Gibson tied the game at 4 after five innings, Vian took the lead for good on a one-out, two-run single by Akeelah Truett for a 6-4 lead in the sixth inning.

After the Lady Tigers cut their deficit to 6-5 after six innings, the Lady Wolverines got an insurance run on Drew’s grounder in the seventh inning.

For the game, Maisie Wells and Hanna Mattingly were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Gibbins got the win, getting eight strikeouts in seven innings.

In Game 1 of Thursday’s Class 3A Super Regional Tournament, Lindsay pitcher Riese Flood got the win as she no-hit the Lady Wolverines over seven innings and got 17 strikeouts.

The Leopardettes scored twice in the first inning and a run in the third inning.

Gibbins suffered the loss, despite fanning six batters in six innings.

In Game 2 of Thursday’s Class 3A Super Regional Tournament, Lindsay broke a scoreless tie with a four-run third inning and a single run in the fourth inning.

Vian’s two runs scored in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Gibbins that scored Locust and a passed ball that scored Wells.

In defeat, Wells was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, Truett was 2-for-3 with a double and Mattingly singled for Vian. Gibbins took the loss.
