Understanding the Make Up of Man
By Pastor Kenneth Byrd,

Round Mountain Community Church

Man is a threepart being: He is a spirit, He has a soul, and he lives in a body. U n d e r standing this has helped m e greatly, I’m so thankful for the truth of God’s word.

I Thessalonians 5:23 says: I pray God, your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul starts with the spirit and works his way out. Many quote this scripture in reverse, they will start with the body, but that’s not how it’s written. People who start with the body are more body conscience, but Paul was more spirit conscience.

We need to know that our human spirit can be developed and trained just like our mind or our physical body can be. Many have educated their minds and trained their bodies, which is good, but have neglected the developing of their spirit. The spirit is the most important of the three because God communicates to us through our spirits. So, let’s locate our spirit.

Romans 10:10, For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

The heart here is our human spirit, the center of man. This does not say that man believes with his head and it doesn’t say man believes with his body, no he believes with his heart or his spirit. Man is a spirit, created in the image and likeness of God, who is a spirit.

John 4:24 says God is a spirit. And Genesis 1:26 says we’re created in God’s image and likeness.

We were created in God’s class, created to fellowship with him. I thank God for a good education, but the most important thing is learning to listen to the voice of my spirit. When God created Adam he didn’t send him to school, yet he named all the animals.

How could he do this? It’s because he was hearing God, he was living from the inside out.

Since the fall of man, Satan has done a good job getting people to focus more on the outward man instead of the inward man.

Well, no wonder, if we neglect our spirit man it will never be developed to hear when God communicates with us. We can’t know God through our senses. God is revealed to man through the spirit of man. Spiritual things are just as real as natural things, a spirit being, God, created all the natural things that we see.

II Corinthians 4:17, For which cause we faint not, but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

Notice Paul said there is an inward man and an outward man. Our body is only the house we live in. I need it to stay here on earth and do the things God has for me. My outward man is getting older, but the real me is not getting older.

Our physical bodies will die, but spirits never cease to exist. Every human being will exist forever, we decide where we will spend eternity but we will exist forever.

I Peter 3:4, But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of the meek of quirt spirit, which is in the sight of God a great price.

Notice the hidden man of the heart is referring to our spirit man, Peter called him a man, yet he is hidden from our natural senses.

Paul said in Romans 7:22, I delight after the law of God after the inner man.

Remember man is a spirit, he has a soul and he lives in a body. It’s not hard to locate the body, but we need help with the spirit and the soul.

With our spirit, we contact the spiritual realm. With our soul, we contract the mental realm. With our body, we contact the physical.

Romans 8:16, The spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

Notice the Holy Spirit doesn’t bear witness with our mind or body, but with our spirit.

We all have had times when we knew we shouldn’t have done some things, how did we know? That was the Holy Spirit bearing witness with our spirit.

As Christians, this is law we’re to live life, from the inside out.
