Vian girls fall to Central in SCT consolation finals; Wolverines stunned twice

The Vian Lady Wolverines came up short in the 2024 Sequoyah County Tournament consolation finals as they lost 54-36 to the Central Lady Tigers on Friday night at Sallisaw High School’s Paul Post Field House.

After losing 50-22 in the opening round on Jan. 2 at Paul Post Field House, the Lady Wolverines (2-5) got their second win of the season on Jan. 3 as they knocked off the Gans Lady Grizzlies 48-22 at Gans High School’s Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse.

The Vian Wolverines were shocked twice as they went 0-2 in this year’s SCT. The Central Tigers edged the Wolverines 63-60 on Jan. 2 at Sallisaw High School’s Paul Post Field House, then the Gore Pirates eliminated the Wolverines 51-45 the following day on the same court.

In the girls’ consolation finals loss to Central, Maisie Wells led Vian with 11 points, followed by Halli Russell with six points, Kala Gibbins with four points, Avery Wright, Rebel Simon and Aliyah Tucker with three points each and LaKaila Drew, Shelbie Glass and Rayleigh Terrill with two points apiece.

In the girls’ consolation semifinals win over Gans, Russell and Skyelar Locust each scored eight points to lead Vian, followed by Simon and Annie Neal with seven points each, Terrill with four points, Wells and Wright each with three points and Gibbins and Kalli Kennedy with two points apiece.

In the openinground loss to Stigler, Wright had six points to lead Vian, followed by Simon and Wells with five points each, Locust with four points and Gibbins with two points.

In the boys’ loss to Central, Yonsi Grass led all scorers with a game-high 31 points to lead the Wolverines (34), followed by Masyn Wright with 21 points, Trace Sanders with four points and Jacob Brannick and Cash Collins with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Gore, Grass led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, followed by Wright with 16 points, Sanders with four points and Brannick and Dante Glass with two points apiece.
