Vian Wolverines baseball team drops three of four games last week
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

It was a rough week last week for the Vian Wolverines as they won once and lost three times, with the only win being a 16-8 victory over the Stilwell Indians on Thursday at the Tim Barton Classic in Stilwell.

Two of the three losses also took place in the Tim Barton Classic as the Wolverines fell 9-8 in nine innings to Sequoyah- Tahlequah on Thursday and 12-2 to Kansas, Okla., on Friday. The week started with a 13-3 loss to Sequoyah-Claremore on April 2 after being rained out at home against Kiefer on April 1.

In the win over Stilwell, the Wolverines (13-12) rallied from an 8-4 thirdinning deficit with a threerun fifth inning, a two-run sixth inning and a sevenrun seventh inning.

For the game, Riley Ellis was 3-for-6 with two doubles, three runs batted in and a run scored, Michael Polecat was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, Cash Collins was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, Gabe Gilbert was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Garrit Hunt doubled and scored four runs and Draighton Fletcher tripled with four RBIs and two runs scored for Vian.

Ellis (5-0) got the win, going the first 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Gilbert got the final out.

In the loss to Sequoyah- Tahlequah, after the Wolverines scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 8-all to force extra innings, the Indians scored once in the ninth inning to get the win.

In defeat, Polecat was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, Ellis was 3-for-5 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored, Kaden Fulbright was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored and Lastyn Taylor was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Fulbright (2-4) suffered the loss in relief, going the final 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. Polecat started and went the first five innings with three Ks.

In the loss to Kansas, after the Wolverines broke the scoreless deadlock with a run in the second inning, the Comets erupted for 10 runs in the third inning to put away the game.

In defeat, Fletcher was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Gilbert doubled with an RBI for Vian.

Gilbert (0-3) took the loss, going the first two innings with a strikeout. Taylor went the final 1.2 innings.

In the home loss April 2 to Sequoyah-Claremore, a six-run first inning put the Eagles ahead 6-0, and they never relinquished the lead. The Wolverines cut the deficit to 6-3 after an inning but got no closer.

In defeat, Ellis doubled with two runs batted in and a run scored, Gilbert singled with an RBI, Fletcher singled and scored once and Taylor singled for Vian.

Fletcher (0-2) suffered the loss, doing the first three innings with four strikeouts. Taylor went the final three innings with three Ks.

On March 29, the Wolverines got a 10-2 win over Haskell at home, thanks to jumping out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings put the game into run-rule status.

For the game, Fletcher was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored, Gilbert was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Fulbright was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Vian.

Polecat (4-1) got the win, going all five innings with seven strikeouts.

After a road game Monday at Warner and a home three-way Tuesday against Pocola and Howe, the Wolverines will be in the three-day Central Tiger Shootout beginning Thursday. Next week will begin with back-to-back home games, 4:30 p.m. Monday against Wilburton and at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday against Hartshorne.
