Vian baseball team’s season ends at regional tournament
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

OKTAHA — The 2024 baseball season ended for the Vian Wolverines as they went 1-2 at last week’s Class 2A Regional Tournament. The Wolverines finish the season at 21-18.

It was the same team that did them in last week, the Morrison Wildcats, as the Wolveriners lost to the ’Cats in last Wednesday’s regional opener 10-2, then were eliminated by Morrison 14-7 in Thurs-day afternoon’s loser’sbracket final.

The one victory the Wolverines got in the regional tournament was a 13-4 win over Hennessey in the loser’sbracket semifinal.

In the opening-round loss to Morrison, the Wildcats broke a 1-all tie with a seven-run fifth inning.

In defeat, Lastyn Taylor was 2-for-3 for Vian.

Riley Ellis (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season, going the first five innings with seven strikeouts. Taylor went the final inning.

In the win over Hennessey, after the Eagles flew out to a 4-1 lead in the second inning, the Wolverines scored eight runs in their half of the frame to take the lead for good at 9-4 after two innings. A pair of tworun innings in the third and fifth innings put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Michael Polecat was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, Stryker Fields was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Gabe Gilbert doubled with a run batted in, Ellis doubled with two RBIs and two runs scored and Cash Collins hit a solo homer and scored three runs for Vian.

Polecat (6-3) got the win, going the first five innings with seven Ks. Kaden Fulbright went the final two innings with a strikeout.

In the season-ending loss to Morrison, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Collins in the first inning, but the Wildcats put away the game with an eight-run second inning for an 8-1 lead after two innings. Vian got within three runs on two occasions, with the last time at 9-6 on Draighton Fletcher’s RBI groundout in the fourth inning, but the Wolverines got no closer.

In defeat, Collins was 2-for-2 with two doubles, three runs batted in and two runs scored for Vian.

Gilbert (0-6) took the loss, going just an inning with two strikeouts. Kaden Fulbright went the final six innings with four Ks.
