Vian School Board approves budget increases, contracts
By AMIE CATO-REMER Editor,

The Vian Board of Education convened on July 8 to address issues impacting the district ahead of the upcoming school year, including the approval of budget increases and numerous contracts.

Despite no patrons being present for public comment, the board proceeded with superintendent and principal reports covering updates on high school activities, the school budget, maintenance of the high school parking lot, and the Backcountry Explorers Club.

The board approved a series of financial matters, including payroll and encumbrances across various funds, resulting in a net increase of over $2.7 million for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

Furthermore, the board sanctioned multiple handbooks for the elementary, middle and high schools, ensuring guidelines and policies are in place for the forthcoming academic year. However, action on the high school handbook was tabled to a later date.

In addition, the board authorized agreements for workers’ compensation services and property casualty insurance, essential for ensuring the safety and security of students and staff. They also green-lit various infrastructure projects, including the installation of new fencing around the football field and updates to gas services at multiple school buildings by Rocky Top Plumbing.

The board’s deliberations extended to educational tools and platforms, with approvals granted for student communication applications such as Remind and Google Classroom, underscoring the district’s commitment to enhancing learning experiences through technology.

Executive session discussions followed, focusing on personnel matters and contract renewals for central office staff, administrators, and 12-month employees. Upon reconvening in open session, the board swiftly approved these contracts and acknowledged resignations where applicable.

The meeting concluded with the acceptance of a resignation from Adria Sweet and a vote to adjourn at 9:04 p.m.
