The Webbers Falls Board of Trustees convened on June 11 to address critical community issues, with notable discussions centered around code enforcement measures and enhancements to police department resources.
The meeting began at 6:13 p.m. with a roll call confirming the presence of Trustees Jewell Hall, Danny Haley, John Morgan, and Johnny Pollard, while Robert Ross Jr. joining shortly after.
Code enforcement vigilance
Code enforcement provided a detailed report highlighting ongoing efforts to maintain community standards. He reported that 15 letters had been sent out and several citations issued. Emphasizing the importance of property maintenance, residents were that properties would be inspected every 10 days for compliance with mowing regulations.
Sandra Wright expressed concerns about a vacant property on North River Road, citing overgrown conditions attracting wildlife. Trustees assured her that steps were being taken to address the issue promptly.
City maintenance also was commended for mosquito spraying and working on the cemetery, and the board approved splitting the cost with ECOWA on purchasing a scissor-lift.
Police, fire departments
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of the police department. Trustees unanimously approved the surplus of a 2011 Chevy Impala from the department’s fleet. Additionally, they green-lit the purchase of stalker radar parts for seven police vehicles at a total cost of $2,800, aimed at improving traffic monitoring and safety within the community.
Further bolstering police resources, the board approved the acquisition of a dog kennel, highlighting their commitment to supporting law enforcement efforts. The fire department reported about $1,000 was raised during their fish fry, which was held on July 4. It also was noted that the department has implemented a “work night” once a month.
Community events, future plans Discussions also encompassed community events and infrastructure projects. The approval for a Fall Fest/ Street Dance scheduled tentatively for September 21, was met with unanimous support, pending coordination with the neighboring town of Gore’s Cruise night, also set for Sept. 21.
Trustees tabled the decision on purchasing and planting trees in the park, pending consultation with relevant authorities.
Executive session, personnel matters
Following public discussions, the board moved into executive session to deliberate on personnel matters. Upon reconvening, they approved a raise for Jimmie Reed to $15 per hour for achieving CLEET certification. Additionally, Caden Robinson was hired as part-time summer help at $13.50 per hour.
