Rough I-40 Classic for Vian Lady Wolverines, who beat Henryetta, split with Roland to begin week
By David Seeley Sports Editor

It was a rough weekend for the Vian Lady Wolverines softball team in the I-40 Softball Classic as they went 0-4, losing 3-1 to Muldrow and 5-4 to Warner on Thursday at Central High School, then falling 8-7 to Central and 5-3 to Gore on Saturday.

The week started a little better for the Lady Wolverines as they split their District 3A-8 doubleheader on Sept. 9 with Roland, winning the opener 7-6 before losing the nightcap 14-4. On Sept. 10, they picked up an 8-7 district road victory over Henryetta.

In the loss to Muldrow, the Lady Bulldogs scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead. The Lady Wolverines scored once in the sixth inning, but their rally fell short.

In defeat, Rebel Simon was 2-for-3, Rayleigh Terrill doubled and Eden Girty tripled with a run batted in for the Lady Wolverines (10-13).

Kala Gibbins (10-13) suffered the loss as she struck out two batters in 5.2 innings.

In the loss to Central, two steals of home, one by Camryn Gilliam and the other by Keeley Poindexter, and an RBI single by Allie Harris produced three runs in the sixth inning to rally the Lady Tigers to the win.

In defeat, Terrill was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, Scarlett Fields was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Hanna Mattingly doubled with an RBI, Tressa Sandlin doubled with an RBI and Girty tripled with an RBI and a run scored for Vian.

Gibbins suffered the loss, although she had seven Ks in five innings.

In the loss to Gore, the Lady Pirates rallied for the come-frombehind victory with a three-run fourth inning and a two-run fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Wolverines scored once in their half of the fifth innings, but the rally fell short.

In defeat, Mattingly was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Vian.

Gibbins was the hardluck pitcher as she threw a five-inning four-hitter with 11 Ks, but gave up no earned runs as all five Gore runs were aided by three Vian errors.

In the loss to Warner, the Lady Eagles, who trailed 4-2 in the fifth inning, scored twice in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-all, then won it with a run in the fifth inning.

In defeat, Terrill doubled and scored once, while Halli Russell hit a two-run, inside-thepark home run for Lady Wolverines as those two hits were all Vian could muster off Warner pitcher Ella Labounty, who threw a two-hitter with 11 Ks.

Gibbins took the loss, despite getting eight Ks and throwing a 5.2-inning three-hitter.

In the Game 1 win over Roland, the Lady Wolverines rallied from a 5-0 second-inning deficit with a three-run fourth inning and a four-run fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. The Lady Rangers scored once in the bottom of the fifth inning but got no closer.

For the game, Mattingly was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Simon was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for Vian. Gibbins got the win.

In the Game 2 loss to Roland, the Lady Rangers scored in five of the six innings that were played before the contest reached run-rule status.

Roland rallied from a 2-1 second-inning deficit to take the lead for good with a three-run third inning for a 4-2 lead. Vian cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third inning but got no closer. The Lady Wolverines cut the Roland lead to 7-4 after four innings, but the Lady Rangers scored four runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning to take a 14-4 lead.

In defeat, Gibbins was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Mattingly was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Cassidee Postoak was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Fields doubled with an RBI and a run scored for Vian. Gibbins suffered the loss.

In the road victory over Henryetta, Russell’s RBI single in the seventh inning broke a 7-all tie to help the Lady Wolverines (7-4 in District 3A-8 play) get the district road victory.

For the game, Simon was 3-for-5 with a solo home run and three runs scored, while Mattingly was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Vian.

Gibbins got the win, striking out six batters in seven innings.
