Vian Wolverines rout Atoka, set up district showdown with Henryetta for homecoming Thursday night
By David Seeley Sports Editor

ATOKA — The Vian Wolverines wasted little time in making sure their record stayed unblemished through six weeks of the 2024 high school football season.

The Wolverines ran their overall record to 6-0 and their District 2AII-4 record to 3-0 with a 48-0 rout of the host Atoka Wampus Cats on Friday night at Phillips Field.

The Wolverines got a 49-yard touchdown run from Masyn Wright just 22 seconds into the game, then a pair of TD passes from Cash Trammel — a 24-yarder to Jacob Brannick and a 31-yarder to Wright — to go with three extra points by Mikayah Mendoza for a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

Wright then went to work in the second quarter as he scored on three touchdowns runs of 73, 33 and 3 yards. Mendoza hit two more PATs to up Vian’s lead to 41-0 halftime lead.

Draighton Fletcher scored Vian’s final TD on a 1-yard run with 1:24 left in the third quarter. Mendoza’s sixth extra point ended the game’s scoring.

Vian coach Gary Willis was hoping as district play began Sept. 26 with the road game at Spiro that his team would put together four full quarters of football. Although the district foes have ended up making the Wolverines’ starters only play about a half or at most three quarters, the veteran coach believes his team is pretty much hitting on all cylinders.

“Their effort has been good while they’re in,” Willis said. “They’re only getting about half a game. We’re playing pretty good football right now. We still haven’t gotten that full game in, but it could very likely come this week.”

The Wolverines will celebrate homecoming with a 7 p.m. Thursday game vs. the Henryetta Knights in a contest for district supremacy.

The Knights (5-1 overall, 3-0 in district play) are on a threegame winning streak beginning with district play — beating Morris 46-0, Wilburton 2512 and Valliant 42-41. Their only loss came in their final non-district game 34-25 to Beggs after winning their first two games — 58-0 over Kellyville and 58-0 over Okemah.

“You would think this would be for the district championship,” Willis said about Thursday night’s game. “Them and Valliant were close, but Henryetta had jumped out ahead. They may have gotten flat. They’re a well-coached team. They run the football really well. They have a really good running game. The quarterback is capable of throwing. He’s thrown for a lot of yards.”
