Eight Sequoyah County veterans were presented with Quilts of Valor from the Quilts of Valor Foundation on Oct. 19 at the VFW Post 8384 in Muldrow.
Five of the recipients are from Sallisaw and members of Carnie Welch American Legion Post 27 in Sallisaw.
A Quilt of Valor (QOV) is described as a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand-quilted that is awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war.
The quilt reads, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”
To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required information, it must be awarded (it is not a gift) and it must be recorded.
River Valley Stars QOV, a group from Western Central Arkansas, presented the following veterans with a Quilt of Valor, thanking them for their service to our country:

• Robert Murchison, U.S. Air Force, 1977 to 1980, of Sallisaw
• Carolyn Farris, U.S. Army, Korea, of Sallisaw
• John Farris, U.S. Air Force, Gulf War/Cold War/ODS, of Sallisaw
• Perry Simpson, U.S. Navy, Gulf War/ Cold War/ODS, of Sallisaw
• Larry Boatright, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, Cold War/OIF/ OEF/ODS, of Sallisaw
• Joe Wagg, U.S. Marine Corps, Cold War
Because Oklahoma does not have a QOV group on the eastern central portion of Oklahoma, River Valley Stars said if anyone in our area is interested in exploring or starting a QOV group to visit https://www.qovf.org.
The group reportedly started with two people and now has 25 members. They have awarded more than 400 quilts since 2019.
