Vian Wolverines claw Morris Eagles, set up district title clash with Valliant
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Vian Wolverines not only clawed their way past the Morris Eagles 59-0 last Friday night at St. John Stadium, but they also have clawed their way almost to another outright district championship.

The Wolverines (9-0 overall, 6-0 in District 2AII-3 play) are atop the district standings, a game ahead of the two teams tied for second place — the Valliant Bulldogs and the Henryetta Knights. While Vian has beaten Henryetta, the Wolverines and the ’Dogs will clash for district supremacy at 7 p.m. this Friday at St. John Stadium on Senior Night.

A Vian win over Valliant will make the Wolverines have a perfect district season, and an undefeated regular season, to give them the district title outright.

However, should Valliant upset Vian and Henryetta knock off Atoka, there would be a three-way tie for first place with the Wolverines, Bulldogs and Knights — with district points deciding first through third place, which right now would likely favor Vian for the top spot.

Should Valliant upset Vian and Atoka upset Henryetta, the Wolverines and the ’Dogs would be the only two teams tied for first place. Under that scenario, Valliant would get the top spot for the playoffs from the district, while Vian would slip to No. 2.

The Wolverines wasted little time in putting away the game as they jumped out to a 44-0 lead after a quarter, then scored a TD in the second and fourth quarters to seal the deal.

Masyn Wright rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on TD runs of 65 and 36 yards, while Draighton Fletcher had 80 yards rushing and a hat trick of TDs on carries of 22, 4 and 49 yards.

The combination of quarterback Cash Trammel and Jacob Brannick hooked up twice for touchdown passes — a 34-yarder and a 13-yarder — while Chris Cheater hit Dante Glass on a 78-yard TD pass.

The defense also recorded a safety, while Mikayah Mendoza hit all seven extra points. It would have been a perfect 8-for-8 for Mendoza if not for a bad snap, which still worked out for Vian as Trammel, the holder, hit Riley Ellis on the play for a twopoint conversion.
