Webbers Falls basketball teams sweep consolation finals in WTC

HENRYETTA — The Webbers Falls High School teams swept the consolation championship games on Saturday at the Wilson Tiger Classic at Wilson (Henryetta) High School.

The Lady Warriors defeated the Gans Lady Grizzlies 62-37 in Saturday afternoon’s consolation championship game after edging Liberty 33-31 in Friday night’s consolation championship. The Lady Warriors opened the tournament by calling 41-28 to Summit Christian on Dec. 10.

The Warriors tamed the Gans Grizzlies 6237 to capture Saturday afternoon’s consolation title game. The Warriors split their first two games of the tournament, losing 44-29 to Caney Valley on Dec. 10 but rallying to defeat the Wilson (Henryetta) junior varsity 51-40.

In the girls consolation title game, the Lady Warriors (3-3) jumped out to a 16-6 lead after a quarter and were never headed.

For the game, Webbers Falls put three players into double figures, led by all-tournament team member Bridgette Baer’s gamehigh 16 points, followed by Audri Spears with 14 points and Cheyanne Herrier with 13 points. Bailey Ward scored eight points, followed by Kailey Mannon and River Harrison with three points each and Payton Shanks with two points.

There was no more information reported on the Webbers Falls girls’ consolation semifinal win over Liberty by press time.

In the opening round, Baer scored seven points to lead the Lady Warriors, followed by Spears and Abbie Patterson with five points each, Mannon with four points, Madison Smith with three points and Herrier and Ward with two points apiece.

In the boys’ consolation title game, the Warriors (4-2) jumped out to an 18-8 lead after a quarter, en route to a 3317 halftime advantage and a 53-26 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Thadan Yandell, a member of the all-tournament team, scored a gamehigh 24 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Chevy Cole with 12 points, Luke Pierce with 10 points, Eli Hefflin with five points, Elliott Kunkel and Brutus Robinson with four points each, Cordae Shine with two points and Trysten Wilbourn with a free throw.

In the boys consolation semifinals, the Warriors trailed 1412 after a quarter and 24-23 at halftime, but they outscored Wilson (Henryetta) JV 22-6 in the third quarter to take a 45-30 lead into the final period.

For the game, Webbers Falls put a trio of players into double figures, led by Cole’s game-high 15 points, followed by Yandell’s 13 points and Kunzel’s 10 points. Pierce scored six points, followed by Wilbourn with three points and Robinson with two points.

In the opening round, Caney Valley rallied from a 13-12 halftime deficit by using a 17-7 third quarter against the Warriors to take a 39-20 lead into the final period.

In defeat, Yandell and Pierce scored eight points each to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Cole with six points, Wyatt Scheeland with four points, Gunner Shelby with two points and Kunkel with a free throw.
