Vian Teams Split with Westville, Fall to Howe, Spiro

The Vian High School basketball teams split their home Big 8 Conference games with Westville on Jan. 28 at B.J. Traw Gymnasium, but suffered a pair of home conference losses to Howe on Thursday night and a pair of road defeats at the hands of Spiro on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.

On Jan. 28, the Wolverines defeated the Yellowjackets 56-41, but the Lady Wolverines lost 51-36 to the Lady ’Jackets.

On Thursday night, the Lady Lions beat the Lady Wolverines 77-46, the the Lions tamed the Wolverines 67-44.

On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Wolverines 52-29, followed by the ’Dogs getting the sweep with a 55-45 victory over the Wolverines.

In the boys’ win over Westville, the Wolverines (9-9 overall, 2-3 in Big 8 Conference play) broke a 19-all halftime tie with a 20-10 third quarter and a 17-12 final period to get the home conference win.

For the game, Masyn Wright scored a gamehigh 25 points to lead Vian, followed by Cash Trammel with 10 points, Jacob Brannick with nine points, Trace Sanders with eight points and Jeremiah Marshall and Ethan Bullock with two points apiece.

In the girls’ loss to Westville, the Lady Yellowjackets jumped out to a 16-6 lead after a period en route to a 25-11 halftime advantage and a 37-23 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Halli Russell scored 12 points to lead the Lady Wolverines (3-15, 0-5), followed by Rebel Simon with eight points, Avery Wright with five points, Shelbie Glass and La-Koeta Cheater with four points each and Rayleigh Terrill with three points.

In the girls’ loss to Howe, the Lady Lions raced out to a 31-2 lead after a quarter and never looked back.

In defeat, Simon and Glass each scored 11 points to lead Vian, followed Wright with eight points, Terrill with four points, Kala Gibbins and Aliyah Tucker with three points each and Bostyn Rogers, Blazi Dieter and Kiah Richardson with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Howe, the Lions roared out to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter, en route to a 36-22 halftime advantage and a 51-39 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Wright scored 17 points and Joe O’Neal added 10 points to lead Vian, followed by Trammel with eight points, Sanders with seven points and Brannick with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Spiro, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-5 lead after a period en route to a 29-7 halftime advantage and a 4116 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Wright and Glass each scored nine points to lead Vian, followed by Gibbins with five points, Richardson with four points and Simon with two points.

In the boys’ loss to Spiro, the ’Dogs got out to a 9-4 lead after a quarter, which became a 21-17 halftime advantage and a 40-32 lead after three periods.

In defeat, Wright scored a game-high 20 points to lead Vian, followed by Sanders with 11 points, Brannick with 10 points and Michael Polecat with four points.

On Friday, the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) handed out the teams’ district assignments, which saw both teams sent to Talihina for the Class 2A District Tournament, set for Feb. 14 or 15.
