Vian basketball teams see seasons end with regional losses to Warner
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

TALIHINA — On Feb. 15, the Vian High School basketball teams lost their games in the Class 2A District Tournament to the host Talihina Lady Golden Tigers and Tigers on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.

On Friday afternoon, losses on the same piece of hardwood ended the seasons for the Lady Wolverines and Wolverines.

In the Class 2A Regional Tournament consolation quarterfinals Friday afternoon on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium at Talihina High School, the Lady Wolverines lost 63-37 to the Warner Lady Eagles, then the Eagles tamed the Wolverines by a score of 60-52 as both Warner teams staved off elimination.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Eagles broke a 13all tie at the end of the first quarter by outscoring the Lady Wolverines 21-7 in the second period to take a 34-20 halftime lead, which became a 50-26 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Avery Wright, playing in her final game for the Lady Wolverines (4-21), led Vian with a gamehigh15 points, followed by Halli Russell with eight points, Rayleigh Terrill with seven points, Kala Gibbins — also playing her final game for the Lady Wolverines — with five points and LaKeota Cheater with two points.

In the boys’ contest, the game was tied at 15all after the first eight minutes, but the Wolverines (8-14) outscored Warner 16-11 to take a 31-26 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Eagles slowly started rallying for their comefrom- behind win as Warner outscored Vian 11-5 in the third quarter to take a 37-36 lead, then put away the game with a 23-16 final period to seal the comeback victory.

In defeat, Vian put a trio of players into double figures, led by Masyn Wright’s 18 points, followed by Trace Sanders with 13 points and Jeremiah Marshall’s 12 points. Cash Trammel had four points, followed by Jacob Brannick — playing his final game for the Wolverines — with three points and Michael Polecat with two points.
