Vian Wolverines end perfect week by winning Central Tiger Shootout; pitcher no-hits Westville

The Vian Wolverines capped a perfect week on the diamond by winning the Central Tiger Shootout on Saturday evening with a 9-1, fiveinning victory over the Warner Eagles in the title game.

The Wolverines reached the championship contest with a 170, four-inning rout of Westville on Thursday, then got past the Muldrow Bulldogs 9-6 in Friday afternoon’s championship semifinals.

Last week got started with a pair of home victories — 11-3 over Warner in five innings on April 7 and 13-5 in five innings over Rejoice Christian on April 8.

In the Central Tiger Shootout title game, the Wolverines (19-5) scored once in the first inning, four runs in the third inning and twice in the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead. A two-run fifth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Michael Polecat was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a run batted in for Vian.

Riley Ellis (3-0) got the complete-game, fiveinning win, striking out nine batters and throwing a three-hitter.

In the tournament semifinal victory over Muldrow, the Wolverines broke a 5-all tie with a two-run fifth inning for a 7-5 lead. After the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 7-6 in the sixth inning, the Wolverines got two big insurance runs in their half of the frame.

For the game, Manny Terrill was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Drake Collins was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Ellis doubled and scored once for Vian.

Polecat (5-2) got the win, going the first six innings with five strikeouts. Terrill got his second save of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning as he struck out the side.

In the tournament opener, the Wolverines scored four runs in the first inning and six runs in the third inning for a 10-0 lead. A seven-run fourth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Kaden Fulbright was 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored, Draighton Fletcher was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI, Drake Collins was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs, Jeremiah Marshall was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI and Polecat doubled with two RBIs and a run scored for Vian.

Fulbright (3-2) got the complete-game, fourinning win, striking out five batters and no-hitting the Yellowjackets.

In the victory over Rejoice Christian, the Wolverines, who had their lead trimmed to 2-1 after two innings, scored five runs in the third inning for a 7-1 lead. After the Eagles trimmed their deficit to 7-5 with a fourrun fourth inning, the Wolverines put the game into run-rule status with a two-run fourth inning and a four-run fifth inning.

For the contest, Marshall doubled with two runs batted in, Fulbright doubled with four RBIs and Ellis doubled and scored four runs for Vian.

Chris Cheater (3-0) got the win, going the first 3.2 innings. Fulbright got his first save of the season, going the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout.

In the opening-week win over Warner, the Wolverines rallied from a 3-0 second-inning deficit with a four-run second inning and a fiverun fourth inning for a 9-3 lead. A two-run fifth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Fulbright was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, three runs batted in and two runs scored, Terrill was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Marshall was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Cash Collins doubled with two RBIs and a run scored and Fletcher doubled with two runs scored and an RBI for Vian.

Polecat got the win in relief, going the final four innings with six strikeouts. Terrill got the start and pitched the first inning with a strikeout.
