Webbers Falls Warriors claim district championship, await this week’s regional tournament
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

The Webbers Falls Warriors baseball team captured the Class A-II District Tournament title with a sweep of the Cave Springs Hornets on April 22 at Eual Carter Sports Center.

The Warriors handedly swept the Hornets by scores of 12-0 in three innings and 18-1 in three innings.

That took some of the sting out of losing last week’s opener 10-0 in five innings to the host Howe Lions on April 21.

The Warriors (1214-1) were sent by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) to Stonewall for the Class A-II Regional Tournament, which will begin Thursday.

The Warriors will meet Union City at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, with the winner meeting the Keota- Stonewall winner at 4 p.m. Thursday, with the winner playing for the regional title at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The Webbers Falls-Union City loser will meet the Keota-Stonewall loser in an elimination game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The loser’sbracket final will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday between the 4 p.m. Thursday loser and the 6:30 p.m. Thursday winner, with the winner playing in the regional championship game at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The if-game is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday.

In the first district tournament game against Cave Springs, Brutus Robinson (3-3) threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts.

The Warriors got Robinson all the run support needed with a three-run first inning. A nine-run second inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Ryan Cowan was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, Luke Pierce doubled with two runs scored and an RBI and Gunner Shelby tripled with two runs scored and an RBI for Webbers Falls.

In the district-clinching win, the Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, which became a 9-1 advantage after two innings and an 18-1 lead after a ninerun third inning to put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Robinson was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Pierce was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, Trysten Wilbourn was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, Hayden Stephens was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored, Clayton Roberts was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Shelby doubled with three runs scored and two RBIs for Webbers Falls.

After Ryan Cowan got the first out by strikeout, Robinson went the rest of the way to get the win as he fanned five batters in three innings.

In the loss to Howe, the Warriors got one-hit by Howe pitcher Wesley Toney, who struck out six batters in five innings.

The Lions broke a scoreless tie with a run in the second inning and seven runs in the third inning for an 8-0 lead. A two-run fourth inning put the game into runrule status.

In defeat, Elliott Kunkel’s single was the lone hit for Webbers Falls.

Robinson took the loss, going the first 1.1 innings with three strikeouts. Pierce got the next three outs, all by strikeouts. Cowan got the next two outs, one by strikeout, then Wilbourn got the next two outs. Shelby went the final inning.
