Vian Wolverines see baseball season end with regional finals loss to Oktaha

Wolverines as they lost the Class 2A-I Regional Tournament title game 4-0 to the Oktaha Tigers on Friday afternoon at Sallisaw High School’s “Turf of Dreams.”

The Wolverines won their regional opener Thursday with a 6-0 win over the Chouteau-Mazie Wildcats before falling 12-1 in five innings to the Tigers in the winner’s-bracket final.

The Wolverines won the loser’s-bracket final 1-0 over the Newkirk Tigers on Friday before losing the regional championship to Oktaha.

Last week started with a 13-5, six-inning road victory over the Haskell Haymakers on May 5.

The Wolverines ended the season at 31-8.

In the regional championship game, Oktaha scored once in the second inning and three runs in the second inning for a 4-0 lead.

Oktaha pitcher Darren Ledford struck out five batters and threw a three-hitter as Cash Collins, Manny Terrill and Stryker Fields each singled for the only hits for Vian.

Terrill (5-2) suffered the heartbreaking loss as he also threw a threehitter with two strikeouts.

In the regional tournament’s loser’s-bracket final against Newkirk, Draighton Fletcher stole home on a double-steal attempt in the opening inning for the game’s only run.

For the contest, Jeremiah Marshall doubled, while Fletcher and Michael Polecat singled for Vian.

Riley Ellis (5-1) got the complete-game victory, fanning eight batters and throwing a four-hitter.

In the regional tournament winner’s-bracket final, Oktaha took control early with a fiverun first inning, which evolved into a 6-1 lead after two innings and a 7-1 advantage after four innings. A five-run fifth inning put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Collins, Fletcher, Marshall and Terrill each singled for Vian.

Ellis suffered his first defeat of the season, only going the first twothirds of an inning with a strikeout. Chris Cheater went the next four innings with a strikeout, while Marshall got the final Oktaha out in the fifth inning.

In the regional-tournament win over Chouteau- Mazie, Polecat (7–2) threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.

The Wolverines broke a scoreless tie with a two-run first inning, then scored once in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning.

For the game, Fletcher was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Terrill was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and Collins doubled with an RBI and a run scored for Vian.

In the road victory over Haskell, the Wolverines broke a 5-all tie with a three-run fifth inning and a five-run sixth inning for a 13-5 lead to put the game into runrule status.

For the contest, Fletcher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Polecat was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored, Terrill was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Marshall was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Cheater was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs for Vian.

Cheater (6-0) got the win in relief, pitching the fourth inning. Polecat got the start and struck out three batters in the first inning. After Ellis got a strikeout in his lone inning of work in the second inning, Terrill pitched the third inning. Kaden Fulbright pitched the fifth inning with a strikeout and Marshall pitched the sixth inning with a strikeout.
