As Father’s Day approaches, the EODD Area Agency on Aging and the Ombudsman program are encouraging families and community members to visit residents in local nursing homes, assisted living and RCF’s—many of whom face these holidays without family nearby.

While cards and gifts are appreciated, a personal visit can offer much more. For nursing home residents, especially those with limited or no family contact, a visit can bring joy, ease feelings of isolation, and provide critical emotional support. “Too many residents go without visitors, especially during holidays that are meant to celebrate family,” Shelli Dunham, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Supervisor, said. “Even a short visit can make a lasting impact.”

Research shows that regular social interaction improves mental health, lowers rates of depression, and supports cognitive wellbeing in older adults. Community involvement is essential in helping residents feel remembered and valued.

The Role of the Ombudsman Program

The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program advocates for the rights and well-being of individuals living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. In addition to resolving complaints and protecting resident rights, local ombudsmen help connect community members with meaningful volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers can play a powerful role by visiting residents, forming friendships, and helping ensure their voices are heard.
