Davis Family Reunion to be Held This Weekend

Davis Family Reunion to be Held This Weekend

The Charlie Ambers and Lula McFarland Davis family reunion will be Sunday, June 29, at the Blackgum Community Center on Hwy 100, 1 mile east of Tenkiller Dam.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 (please bring a covered dish). Come early to visit. Family photos will be after lunch (wear your family shirts).

Charlie Ambers was born October 1884 and died May 1973 at 89-years-old. Lula was born March 1891 and died October 1944 at age 53. They lived in Tennessee before coming to Oklahoma in a wagon train.

Charlie and Lula Davis were the parents of 18 children, all born and raised in the Blackgum Community. Charlie was a farmer, merchant, owned a gin mill, made brooms, was an agent for the Indians, a county road surveyor until Oklahoma became a state, district commissioner, and a Holiness minister.

He was the first county commissioner after Oklahoma became a state. He was on the school board at the Blackgum School.

Their home was always open to neighbors or strangers. During the Depression he would butcher a cow or pig and have a barbecue for the community, even though he had a large family to feed.

Charlie had a store at Blackgum Landing where there was a ferry barge to cross the river. All 18 children have now passed but the reunion continues with the children and grandchildren.

This Davis family has a love and legacy for the area their parents and many of them have grown up in. The Blackgum Community Center/Fire Department Training Center property was donated by the Cecil Davis family and they continue to support it. There are many landmarks around the Blackgum area with the Davis name on them.

There are 63 living first cousins who remain close, considering all the different states they live in.

There will be a pancake breakfast Monday morning, June 30, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Blackgum Community Center to wish all the traveling relatives a safe trip home. The Blackgum Fire Department has generously offered to come in to cook. All friends and family are welcome, $10 per person for a delicious breakfast.

Please join us.
