Trustees address key issues ahead of Webbers Falls Day
By AMIE CATO-REMER Editor

The Webbers Falls Board of Trustees convened for its regular meeting on June 10, where the board members took care of several key issues on the agenda, including updates and other decisions.

Public comments, updates

Brett Carter opened the public speaking portion by thanking town workers for mosquito control efforts and gave a preview of activities planned for Webbers Falls Day.

Meghan Johnson expressed appreciation to the police department for their support of a recently canceled 5K and voiced concerns about the senior nutrition center’s age limit, advocating for broader access.

Trustee Danny Haley reiterated appreciation for mosquito spraying efforts. Police chief Mike James presented the monthly report, while city maintenance worker Steven Barrows noted that a team member is out for surgery and mosquito spraying remains a priority. Code enforcement reported ongoing property cleanup efforts, particularly around apartment complexes.

A proposal to outsource payroll for better segregation of duties was tabled for 60 days pending further research on costs.

The board approved several payments and contracts:

• $1,605 to Light ‘em Up Emergency for fire department equipment.

• FY 2025–2026 contract with Muskogee City-County E911 Trust Authority.

• An SRO (School Resource Officer) contract for the 2025–26 school year.

Justin Keyes was hired as a part-time summer helper at a rate of $12 per hour.

Trustees also voted to:

• Allow ECOWA to maintain its own liability insurance while keeping the town’s blanket coverage unchanged.

• Adjust property content values, reducing the old police department’s contents to zero and assigning $125,000 for the new police department.

Other notable items

• The issue of who should receive traffic fine payments was resolved with a flexible, case-by-case approach.

• Multiple job duty discussions, including those of the town clerk and police chief, were postponed.

• A proposal to annex police coverage of I-40 to include the 283mile marker rest area was tabled until the next meeting.

• The board approved relocating two portable toilets from Vaught Cemetery to the park for Webbers Falls Day and renting two additional units, including one handicap-accessible.

Proposals regarding ditch work on Robert Castillo’s property, replacing a streetlight, and installing horseshoe pits in the park were discussed but no action was taken. After a full agenda and several unanimous votes, the meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m.

Special meeting In a brief 12 minute special meeting held at noon on June 3, the trustees addressed the condition of several properties during their town meeting.

The five properties listed for consideration were 100 W. Oak St. owned by Webbers Falls Properties, 102 S. River Rd. owned by Min Song Yi, and 215, 216 and 220 N. River Road, which are all owned by Mary Taber.

The board unanimously approved abatement for four of the five properties listed. A motion to abate 100 W. Oak St. passed with a motion by Danny Haley and a second by Jewell Hall. Discussion on 102 S. River Rd., however, resulted in no action being taken.

The three properties on North River Road, all owned by Taber, were each discussed and approved for abatement in separate motions with all motions passing unanimously.

This news story is based on the unofficial minutes from the board meeting and could be in error if the minutes are changed prior to adoption.
