Benefit will aid those impacted by fireworks explosion
By AMIE CATO-REMER Editor

A benefit featuring BBQ, a good ‘ol pie, silent and live auction, and bake sale is set for Saturday at the county fairgrounds for three men who were critically injured in a fireworks accident earlier this month.

Ely Smith, 22, and Cash Collins, 18, both Vian graduates, and Brad Lewallen, a volunteer firefighter for Camp Gruber and Keys, were all injured in the wake of a fire that ignited a cache of fireworks being set up at the Choctaw Nation Capitol grounds July 2 in preparation for the annual Boom in the Valley celebration.

Smith later died as a result of his injuries, while Collins and Lewallen remain in area hospitals being treated for third degree burns and other life-threatening injuries.

All proceeds will be split between the three families to help with any needed expenses.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. with the event kicking off with a BBQ dinner at 5 p.m. Cost is $12 per plate and will include a pulled pork sandwich, beans, chips and drink (no deliveries). There will also be a bake sale with pies, cakes, cookies, and other baked goods for purchase.

Tommy Wright with Wright-Way Auctions, Aaron Pitts with Four13 Auction Services and Dennis Huggins with Bordertown Auctions have offered their services for both a live and silent auction with the live auction starting at 6 p.m.

Some of the auction items include processed meat, a redneck hunting blind, numerous shotguns and firearms, cowboy hat, table saw, guided fishing trip, OSU game and suite tickets, hand paintings and other art, hay, photo shoots, teeth bleaching kit, train set, handmade jewelry and other goods, gift certificates from individuals and local merchants, quilts, various rentals, water park tickets, music festival tickets, numerous gifts and themebased baskets, and much more.

The Sequoyah County Fairgrounds are located at 464101 East 1070 Rd., Sallisaw.

For more information, contact Rachel Fair at 918-315-2023, Tramera Fletcher at 918-773-7149 or Gina Risley at 918-208-3242.
