Vian resident Uriah Grass, 46, has been named the winner of the District 4 seat for the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council after receiving nearly 57 percent of the vote in Saturday’s election.
Grass was in a run-off with Janis Dearman of Porum, receiving 359 or 56.89 percent of the vote, while Dearman received 272 votes.
Grass is a graduate of Haskell University and has been employed in the nursing industry for 17 years, with 10 of those being at Redbird Smith Health Center in Sallisaw.
If elected, Grass said his primary goals would be increasing activities for children in his district, providing enhanced support and care for elders, and ensuring that Cherokee culture is preserved and passed down to future generations.
“I have a servant’s heart, and I am ready to work for you and with you,” Grass said.
Results of the run-off election remain unofficial as of press time but are expected to be made official any time now by the Cherokee Nation Election Board.
Grass will be sworn into office on August 14.
