The Town of Gore/Gore Public Works Authority (GPWA) will conduct smoke testing of their sanitary sewer system (weather permitting) beginning on August 11, which could last for several days or up to two weeks, according to a press release issued by GPWA.
Testing will occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Customers whose bill regularly includes a sewage charge were mailed more detailed information, along with their current utility bill.
Smoke testing is a routine procedure which helps identify defects such as cracks, leaks or defective connections that allow stormwater to enter the sewer system.
During the days leading up to Aug. 11, residents are advised to pour water down all drains in their homes or other buildings to ensure that traps are full.
During the test, crews will introduce non-toxic, odorless white smoke into the sewer lines. The smoke may be visible from roof vents, manholes or cracks in the system. If residents see smoke inside their homes, it may indicate a faulty plumbing connection. In such cases, they are asked to contact GPWA immediately.
What to expect:
• The smoke is harmless to humans, pets, and plants.
• It does not leave stains or residue.
• It has a distinctive, but not unpleasant, odor.
This testing is part of the town’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and reduce the risk of sewer overflows during heavy rain events.
