During the annual OHCE (Oklahoma Home and Community Education) State Conference in Oklahoma City July 13-15, the Akins OHCE group won the Healthy Living Most Outstanding Project in the State.
On behalf of the group, Pat Taylor, chairperson of the committee, accepted the award from Mildred Taylor, OHCE State President, who is also an Akins OHCE member.
The Akins OHCE Group makes about 260 tooth fairy pillows each year. February is dental health month, but due to holidays, testing and schedules, the group begins in November visiting the kindergarten classes in the rural schools.
They finish in February, showing a video about dental health and present each child with a tooth fairy pillow and toothbrush. This project has been ongoing for at least 20 years and will continue.
Oklahoma Home and Community Education is an affiliate of Oklahoma State University’s Extension Program. It is a service-based organization and new members are welcome. Currently, there is only one group in Sequoyah County, which meets at 10 a.m. the second Thursday of each month, at the county fair building.
