A Vian man is in custody after allegedly abducting a woman at gunpoint and threatening to kill someone over a missing wallet, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Sequoyah County District Court.
At about 1:20 a.m. on July 24, Vian Police officer Richard Scoggins said he responded to a disturbance call on Mill Street. The caller reported a violent altercation involving a man and woman, with claims that the man was armed.
While en route to the residence, Scoggins spotted a man walking on Martin Luther King Street who he recognized and stopped to speak with him. The man informed the officer that a woman had just been abducted by Kevin J. Wright, 45, during a confrontation at their home.
According to the man, Wright arrived at the residence enraged over a missing wallet and made threats to kill someone if it wasn’t found. The man alleged that Wright forced a woman into a white Chevy Astro van and then drove away.
As the two were speaking, the female victim appeared, visibly shaken and crying. She told police that Wright had stormed into the garage, yelled threats, and forced her into his vehicle.
She said Wright took her to a rural location where they had previously worked on a vehicle, where he ordered her to search for the wallet in the dark.
The female victim recounted that she used her phone light to see and secretly called the man that the officer talked to, placing the call on speaker.
Wright reportedly took her phone and insisted she continue searching. Moments later, she said she heard a gunshot and saw Wright recoil.
That moment allowed her to escape and flee to safety with the man and his mother, who later took her home.
Police have not yet confirmed who fired the shot, but no injuries were reported.
Charges against Wright include burglary in the first degree and feloniously pointing a firearm. He received a $25,000 bond and is to have no contact with the alleged victim as a condition of his bond. He is scheduled for an August 27 arraignment with Associate District Judge Kyle Waters.
Police have not yet recovered the missing wallet, according to the affidavit.
