The Webbers Falls Police Department is undergoing major changes this month after recent layoffs and the resignation of its top official.
On August 11, the town’s former chief of police stepped down from the position, citing personal reasons. Just a day later, the Webbers Falls Board of Trustees appointed assistant chief Austin D. Alden as the new police chief.
Alden, who previously served as the department’s corporal and school resource officer, was promoted to assistant chief before the outgoing chief ’s resignation.
Despite recent budgetary constraints that led to the layoff of two full-time officers earlier this month, Chief Alden assured residents, business owners and visitors that the department will continue to provide uninterrupted law enforcement services.
“We remain committed to protecting this community,” Alden said in the announcement.
As one of his first actions in office, Alden reassigned Court Clerk Autumn Page, a certified peace officer, to serve as the department’s school resource officer. This move ensures continued safety and support within Webbers Falls Public Schools as the new school year begins.
Looking forward, Alden said he plans to hire both part-time and fulltime officers to fill vacant positions. According to the department, these hires will not be affected by the current budget shortfall.
