Gore Pirates celebrate homecoming by routing Mounds in district opener
By David Seeley Sports Editor

It was indeed a happy homecoming for the Gore Pirates as they played their first game in two weeks and pummeled the Mounds Golden Eagles 58-0 in the District AII-3 opener on Friday night at K.G. Horn Stadium.

The Pirates (2-2 overall, 1-0 in district play) jumped out to a 24-0 lead after a quarter, which became a 46-0 halftime advantage and a 52-0 lead going into the final period — in which Gore scored its final touchdown.

Devon Mannon rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 37, 42 and 18 yards. He also caught an 31-yard TD pass from Zach Comer — who threw for 85 yards and two touchdowns, with his other scoring toss being a 12-yarder to Trenton Cunningham.

Tate Brooksher, playing his first game back since suffering an injury in the Keys game on Sept. 5, scored twice on a 9-yard touchdown run and a 55-yard punt return.

Cunningham also took it in from a yard out for the other Gore score.

Mannon scored one two-point conversion and Comer scored three two-point conversions. Comer connected with McKennon McElhaney on a two-point conversion pass play.

“It (the districtopening win) was really good for us,” Gore coach Brandon Ellis said. “Everything clicked. We still need to clean up a couple of things. Overall, we did what we wanted to do when we wanted to do it. It was a successful night.”

The Pirates will return to action with a crucial district road game against Class A, Division II’s topranked Talihina Golden Tigers (4-0, 1-0), which opened district play with a 54-17 road rout over Allen last Friday and is the Class A, Division II defending state runnerup after losing last year’s state title game 58-23 to Woodland, at 7 p.m. this Friday at Talihina’s Doc Robinson Stadium — a.k.a., “The Pit.”

••• To Get There — Take Oklahoma State Highway 100 west to Inter-state 40. Take I-40 west to Warner. Take Oklahoma State Highway 2 south to Kinta. Take Oklahoma State Highway 31 east to Lequire. Take Oklahoma State Highway 82 south to Talihina. Once in Talihina, proceed south on Highway 82 to Oklahoma State Highway 1, which will be Dallas Street. Proceed into downtown to U.S. 271, which is Second Street. Turn left (east) on Second Street (U.S. 271) and proceed to Doc Robinson Stadium.
