A Gore motorcyclist was killed after being struck last Saturday afternoon on U.S. 64 by a Sallisaw man who left the scene, but later returned and confessed to hitting him.
Sallisaw Police said Jimmy England of Sallisaw was placed under arrest for leaving the scene of the accident and transported to the Sequoyah County Detention Center on pending charges of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and removing a license plate.
Court records on Monday showed no formal charges had been filed in Sequoyah County District Court against England.
According to the traffic collision report issued by investigating officer LaLita Armer, England was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on U.S. 64 (Cherokee Ave.) just east of a private drive for Don’s Mobile Homes when his truck collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Jeremy D. Cornelius of Gore.
England’s truck then traveled about 600 feet from where it impacted the motorcycle, leaving almost 500 feet of skid marks to where the pickup came to rest. The motorcycle, however, traveled almost 100 feet farther before landing in the right lane, according to the accident report, while Cornelius was ejected and thrown almost 600 feet from the initial impact site.
England reportedly left the scene, but while police were conducting witness interviews, he returned to the accident location in a different vehicle and asked to speak with officers privately. England then told Lt. Mark Rutherford and Officer James Williams that he was the one who hit the motorcycle.
Cornelius was lifeflighted to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa but passed away on Thursday as a result of his injuries. As of press time Monday, funeral services for Cornelius are pending at Forever Memories Funeral Services in Sallisaw.
