The Webbers Falls Warriors suffered a 4414 loss to the Copan Hornets in a District BII-4 game last Thursday night at Smokey Cox Stadium, a game that was moved from last Friday night to avoid the potential rainy conditions.
“We’re disappointed,” Webbers Falls coach Trent Holt said about the loss. “I thought we played pretty decent. Offensively, we moved the ball around, but we had turnovers that we typically don’t have.”
After the Hornets (7-1 overall, 3-0 in district play) scored on their opening possession to take an 8-0 lead, the Warriors (4-4, 1-2) tied the game on a 1-yard touchdown run by Brutus Robinson, who connected with Thadan Yandell on the two-point conversion, to make the score knotted at 8-all after the first quarter.
Webbers Falls scored its final TD in the second half on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Robinson. The twopoint conversion failed. The Hornets led 22-14 at the half, a half in which the Warriors saw Robinson throw two interceptions and the Hornets recover an onside kick.
However, it was the second half when things got away from the Warriors as the Hornets outscored them 22-0 in the second half, which included a 75-yard fumble recovery score for the Hornets on a play which was ruled a fumble by Robinson instead of an incomplete pass with the ball being knocked out of his hands with his arm in a forward motion.
“You could see his (Robinson’s) arm go forward,” Holt said. “Without instant replay, you need to call that a pass. They (the referees) didn’t. We were still in the ball game (at the time). Another touchdown they had in the second half came when I had a bunch of 2s (reserves) in and he had his 1s in there, and they broke one.”
The Warriors will celebrate Senior Night next Friday night with a 7 p.m. district home game against the Arkoma Mustangs at Smokey Cox Stadium.
“We need to win out,” Holt said.
