Word of the Day: Apathy
By Pastor Michael Martin Vian Baptist Church

What It Means: Apathy refers either to a lack of feeling or emotion, or to a lack of interest or concern.

Philippians 2:20-21 “For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.”

The statement “For all seek their own” is apathy personified. This is a selfish world at best. What is crime but being apthatitic toward other’s right of ownership. Or what is murder, rape and incest but total disregard for rights of others to be happy, safe, and prosperous.

There is an old saying: Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times.

Hardly anyone thinks of God during good times. Men easily have what they need. Only through struggle do we appreciate God. The old adage of ’there are no athiests in fox holes’ is a good comparison.

Isaiah 56:11 “Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.”

Isaiah here is talking about the leadership of Israel, but it seems to apply today as well as thousands of years ago. Even those who try to do good seem to focus only on their own good works. They do not hesitate to desire to take from others to supply their good works. How many phone calls do you get a week asking for money to support their goals. They cannot understand when you think something else is more important. Their view is so focused that they dismiss everything else.

Philippians 3:19 “Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.” That scripture sounds like he knows humanity pretty well, especially the part about “their glory is in their shame.” That describes another focused attempt to force us into their viewpoint.

When we as a Nation going to stand up to the radicals and those that was the tail to wag the dog? Our country was founded on this truth. Majority rules; minority rights. That saying is radicalized to mean something very different than the founding fathers wanted it to proclaim. Majority rules, means the majority decide what the rules are and the minority has exactly the same rights. Our Congress leaders are elected to represent OUR thoughts and desires. WE the People, need to have a voice in legislation and the laws of our country. Again listen to Isaiah: Isaiah 56:11 “Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.”

I am not going to continue to beat a dead dog, but I do want to explain this point in history. 2Thessalonians 2:3 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;” Apathy is an active ingredient to the making of this period in history. We live in a “go along to get along” society. Many say: “If it doesn’t bother me personally, then it doesn’t exist as far as I am concerned.” History has lessons in it to be taught, yet history repeats itself because we did not learn from history. The saying “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” is a well-known quote often attributed to Edmund Burke.

Is America too far gone to be concerned about the things of God? Do we need more situations that fall into the category of hard times for strong men to take charge of our country again. Can good men still lift righteousness above the wickedness and strife of this world?

I say again, get ready. 2Timothy 3:1-7 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
