Gore Pirates end football season with road district loss to Allen
By KEVIN GRAY SPORTS CORRESPONDENT,

Fullback Noah Bray rushed eight times for 117 yards with a touchdown and quarterback Quinton Box threw for two long touchdowns and rushed for 65 yards to lead the Allen Mustangs to a 41-6 home victory over the Gore Pirates in a District AII-3 game Friday night.

The Mustangs (7-3 overall, 6-1 in district play) had already wrapped up a secondplace finish in the standings to earn a home playoff game against the Class A, Division defending state champion Woodland Cougars at 7 p.m. next Friday in Allen.

The Pirates (3-7, 2-5) were eliminated from playoff contention in their Senior Night 38-7 loss to Central on Halloween night. Zach Comer led Gore with 12 rushes for 71 yards while Trenton Cunningham finished with 46 yards on the ground.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the 15 guys that we brought,” Gore coach Brandon Ellis said. “They’re great kids, and it showed tonight. These kids played hard.”

Allen took the opening kickoff and drove down to the Gore 25yard line, but a fumble gave the ball back to the Pirates.

However, after three plays and a punt gave the Mustangs the ball on the Gore 44-yard line, the Mustangs went 44 yards in seven plays to get on the scoreboard when Davion Byrd went in from 15 yards out to put Allen on top 7-0 after Mario Gonzalez hit the extra point.

The Pirates answered with a 10-play drive down to the Allen 19yard line, but Byrd intercepted Cunningham to end the drive.

The Gore defense had Allen at third and 15 from its own 45-yard line, but Box hit Brax Wofford on a 55-yard touchdown pass to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead with Gonzalez’s second PAT.

Gore punted on its next possession. Three plays later, Bray went 76 yards for the score, followed by Gonzalez’ third extra point, for a 21-0 advantage.

After another punt by the Pirates, Box hit Byrd for a 47-yard TD score with just 34 seconds left in the first half. Gonzalez’s fourth PAT put Allen ahead 28-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Box added a 27-yard score and Kayd Bell scored from 52 yards out to push the Allen advantage to 41-0 late in the third quarter. Gonzalez hit one of two extra points in the second half.

Maden Smith scored from eight yards out midway through the fourth quarter for the Pirates’ only score.

Bladin McCartney finished with 35 yards on 11 carries for Gore.

Most of the Gore players were playing on both sides of the ball throughout the game.

“Our kids got a lot of grit to them,” Ellis said. “It’s old school ironman football, and I’m so proud of the guys who stuck it out through the season.”
