For Jessica Johnson, life in Sequoyah County feels like a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively.
A native of Illinois and a 2006 graduate of United Township High School, Johnson traded the fast-paced rhythm of the Quad Cities for the slower, close-knit charm of Vian.
“I enjoy living in Sequoyah County because I enjoy the small-town lifestyle,” Johnson said. “Where I grew up, it’s a lot more fast-paced. I’m thankful my kids are able to grow up in a small, tight-knit community like here.”
Jessica and her husband, Luke Johnson, have built a full and happy life in Vian with their two children, Hunter, almost 16, and Ellie, 9. Their home is made even livelier by two beloved dogs: a 10-year-old Australian shepherd–border collie mix and a 3-year-old lab–pit mix.
Family life takes center stage for Johnson, who says her favorite moments are the simple ones spent together.
“I love spending time with my family,” she shared. “Those are the times that matter most.”
When she’s not with her husband and kids, Johnson enjoys a good thrift store find and never passes up the chance to grab a drink from 7 Brew in Sallisaw.
“Getting 7 Brew any chance I can is definitely one of my little joys,” she said with a laugh. “One of my guilty pleasures, you could say.”
Currently, Johnson is pursuing a Certificate in Child Development at Carl Albert State College, a step that reflects both her love for learning and her passion for working with children.
While her roots may be in Illinois, Johnson says her heart now belongs to rural Oklahoma.
“It’s just a different pace of life here,” she said. “People know you, they care about you, and that sense of community is something really special.”
For Johnson, Vian isn’t just where she lives—it’s where she belongs.
