A bicyclist was seriously injured last Monday afternoon following a collision with a pickup truck along Hwy. 82 in Sequoyah County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).
The accident occurred at about 12:15 p.m. on Dec. 22 near the intersection of Hwy. 82 and East 953 Road, near Snake Creek, in an area where roadway construction was underway.
OHP Trooper Joshua Aden of Troop C reported that a Ford F-250 pickup and a bicyclist were both traveling southbound on the highway when the collision occurred. Preliminary information indicates the pickup was equipped with extended side mirrors, and under circumstances still under investigation, one of the mirrors struck the bicyclist from behind.
As a result of the impact, the bicyclist was thrown from the roadway and came to rest in a nearby ditch. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and the bicyclist was airlifted to Saint Francis Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries was not immediately available.
The driver of the pickup, identified as Patrick L. Stanfill, 61, of Cookson, was not injured in the collision.
The injured bicyclist was identified as Samuel J. Coleman, 32, of Boulder, Colo.
The crash remains under investigation by the OHP and no further details were released as of press time.
