Supporters of an effort to gradually eliminate property taxes have withdrawn and refiled their initiative petition.

Mike Reynolds, a former Republican House member and proponent, said the measure was refiled as State Question 842 to clarify that it was a statutory change and not a constitutional amendment.

Initiative petitions seeking a statutory change require 92,263 signatures to get the issue on the ballot while a constitutional change requires 172,993 signatures.

State Question 842 would let voters decide to eliminate property taxes for homes they live in.

Supporters propose gradually reducing property taxes and eliminating them in 2029.

It would not apply to bonded indebtedness incurred by schools, counties, municipalities or other political subdivisions prior to Dec. 31, 2026.

The measure would not eliminate property taxes for businesses or landlords that offer homes for rent.

Supporters hope to get the issue on the November 2026 ballot.

Reynolds said he does not anticipate a legal challenge to the State Question 842 now that the language has been corrected.
