TAHLEQUAH — Several Vian wrestlers placed in the first annual Cherokee County Classic, which took place Dec. 19-20 at Sequoyah-Tahlequah High School.
In the high school girls’ division, the Lady Wolverines were third with 64.5 points.
Four Lady Wolverines placed, with Maddison Turman winning the title at 120-125 pounds and Carmen Rautenberg taking the championship at 130135 pounds, while Sidney Cox (130-135 pounds) and Aubrey Gant (110-115) were third.
For the Wolverines, they were seventh in the high school boys’ division with 41 points.
Vian’s Garritt Hunt won the 215-heavyweight championship, while 144-pounder Adoff Stahl was second.
The Vian Wolverines were third in the junior high boys’ division with 125.5 points.
Justin Rosson (80 pounds), Kalvin Andrade (140), Lex Branham (170), Axl Branham (195) all placed first, with Cain Winans third at 119 pounds and Brently Smith fourth at 132 pounds.
The Vian Lady Wolverines tied Salina for fourth place at 36 points in the team standings in the junior high girls’ division.
Two Lady Wolverines placed as Leila Cheater was the champion and Brinlee Wooten was runner-up at 110 pounds.
The Vian wrestlers will return to action Jan. 9-10 at the Inola Tournament. Correction In last week’s edition, two Vian Wolverines high school wrestlers had their first names misspelled in both the season-preview story and in the cutline of the team photograph.
Vian’s 126-pounder is Kalvin Andrade, while one of the 175-pounders is Axl Branham.
