Gore basketball teams sweep Webbers Falls, Savanna before suffering losses to Okay
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Gore High School basketball teams each went 2-1 last week.

Both Gore teams swept a pair of games from their Arkansas River rivals from Webbers Falls on Jan. 13 at Gore Event Center as the Lady Pirates spoiled former coach Staci Simeroth’s return to Gore with a 70-12 win over her Lady Warriors before the Pirates downed the Warriors 60-22.

Last Thursday night, the Gore teams swept Savanna as the Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Dawgs 43-25, then the Pirates made the Bulldogs walk the plank in a 53-24 victory.

Last Friday night, it was a rough pair of Riverside Conference games for Gore’s squads as they both lost to Okay as the Lady Mustangs corralled the Lady Pirates 38-35 and the Mustangs downed the Pirates 84-45.

In the girls’ win over Webbers Falls, the Lady Pirates (7-5) jumped out to a 24-3 lead after a quarter and never looked back.

For the game, Kennedy Williams scored a game-high 22 points to lead Gore, followed by River Shoemake with 12 points, Rayleigh Moore with 11 points, Sophie O’Connor with 10 points, Kylie “K.J.” McEver with seven points, Emily Daily with six points and Alevia Reasnor with two points.

In the boys’ victory over Webbers Falls, the Pirates (8-5) jumped out to a 13-4 lead after a quarter, which became a 32-15 halftime advantage and a 46-20 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Gore put a trio of players into double figures, led by Cain Cooper’s 15 points, followed by Eli Munson’s 14 points and Keeton Rowe’s 11 points. Tate Brooksher scored nine points, followed by Kaiden Denton, Cruz Ward and Kyler McGee with three points each and Logan Markou with two points.

In the girls’ victory over Savanna, the Lady Pirates had a 13-9 lead after a quarter, a 23-18 halftime advantage and a 29-22 lead after three periods, but it was Gore’s 14-3 fourth quarter that sealed the deal.

For the game, Daily led Gore with 19 points, followed by Moore and Shoemake with eight points each, Williams with five points and O’Connor with three points.

In the boys’ win over Savanna, the Pirates jumped out to a 13-6 lead after a period, which became a 2414 halftime advantage. Gore put away the game with an 18-4 third quarter to take a 42-18 lead into the final period.

For the game, Cooper scored a game-high 18 points, including his 1,000th point of his prep career, to lead Gore. Munson had 14 points, followed by Tate Brooksher with nine points, Denton with four points, Ward and Gabe Hefley with three points each and Rowe with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Okay, the Lady Mus-tangs jumped out to a 12-5 lead after a period, only to see the Lady Pirates outscore them 11-5 in the second quarter to cut the Okay advantage to 17-16 at halftime. After Okay used a 10-3 third period to up its lead to 27-19 going into the fourth quarter, Gore tried to rally as the Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Mustangs 15-12 in the final period, only to see the rally fall short.

In defeat, Moore scored a game-high 12 points to lead Gore, followed by Daily with eight points, Williams with seven points, O’Connor and Shoemake with three points each and Alevia Reasnor with two points.
