Stepfather is charged in Arkansas fatal shooting
By AMIE CATO-REMER Editor,

Arkansas authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that left a 38-year-old man dead and his stepfather facing a first-degree murder charge in Logan County.

According to reports, Richard Lease, 38, of Logan County, was found dead inside a bedroom at a residence last week along Arkansas 23, south of Booneville, after law enforcement responded to a 911 call.

Officers arriving on scene discovered Lease had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

His stepfather, Richard Rich, 68, also known in detention records as John Rich III of Booneville, was taken into custody without incident, authorities said.

Rich is being held in the Logan County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.

Logan County Sheriff Jason Massey stated there was an ongoing conflict between the two, noting that both Lease and Rich lived at the same residence. Investigators reportedly recovered a rifle from the scene.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette first reported details of the arrest, citing a release from the Logan County Sheriff ’s Office that described the relationship between the victim and suspect and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The newspaper reported that a caller contacted 911 to report a shooting at the residence, prompting a response from Logan County, Booneville and Magazine law enforcement agencies.

Lease’s body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.

The case remains under investigation by the Arkansas State Police, according to Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Tyler Barham of the 15th Judicial District, which includes Logan County.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting as the investigation continues.

Funeral services for Lease were held Saturday at Blackgum Harvestime Church in Vian. Burial followed at Box Cemetery, under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service, Inc.

A complete obituary for Lease can be seen on page 2 of this issue.
