Former Vian Lady Wolverines softball player Maisie Wells said year one of playing college softball for the Eastern Oklahoma State College Lady Mountaineers was everything she imagined it would be — and more.
“It was more than I imagined it would be,” Wells said. “It was really exciting, but nervewracking. Just playing on a team that had the chemistry we did, and could work together like we did and have the energy, it was just amazing. I can’t really put words to it. It was awesome.”
Wells is now gearing up for her sophomore, and final, season with the Lady Mountaineers, and can’t wait to get it started.
“I’m just so excited to get our season going this year because the team we have this year is different because of the energy and the vibe we have,” she said. “The motivation and dedication we have is just something I think is just really special. This is a special team we have this year. It’s completely different than the team we had last year. I think we’re going to be extremely successful this year.”
The only problem is Wells and the Lady Mountaineers will have to wait a few more extra days to get the 2026 season underway. They were supposed to begin the new campaign at 1 p.m. Saturday with a home doubleheader against the Southern Nazarene University junior varsity in Wilburton. However, due to the winter storm coming, that twinbill has been canceled. Thus, the season-opening DH will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday on the road against Paris (Texas) Junior College.
“I’m really disappointed,” Wells said about having to wait to get the new season underway. “I was really looking forward to getting the season going.”
Whenever this season gets started, Wells said her freshman season was like a classroom on the diamond to get her ready for her sophomore season.
“I think it really opened my eyes and changed my mindset because I wasn’t really sure how to act and what to expect going into my first year,” she said. “Coming into this year, I know the type of energy to have, the mindset to have, the discipline I need to have and the type of leadership I need to have for my team being a sophomore (the junior-college version of senior). I think it just helped me really grow into the type of player that I’ve always thought I needed to be for myself and my team.”
Saying Wells is enjoying college life is an understatement.
“It’s amazing,” the former Vian Lady Wolverine said. “The environment and the people are really awesome.”
Wells does have plans on playing at a four-year school once her final EOSC season comes to a close, but nothing is set in stone just yet.
“I’m going to keep my options open,” she said. “Right now, I’m planning on playing somewhere next year.”
