The Vian FFA Chapter recently competed in the first Oklahoma FFA State Wildlife Contest at the Cherokee County Livestock Arena.
Students competed against other FFA members across the state in multiple categories, gaining knowledge about agricultural science through wildlife management studies.
The contest consists of two written exams over hunting and fishing regulations, as well as hunter safety education. Students also have to identify plants (legumes, grasses, woodies, forbs), fish, mammals, amphibians and reptiles, waterfowl birds, and hunting/trapping equipment.
Students also complete a practicum, which consisted of aging white tail deer by jawbone examinations.
Competing in this first state wild contest were Garett Malaska, Tyler Craghead, Creed Clouse, Cooper Risley, Sawyer Roberts, Bryson White, Gabe Wilson and Tressa Sandlin.
The junior team placed sixth in the state, with Sawyer Roberts placing in the top 12 individuals. The senior team placed ninth with Gabe Wilson placing 13th high individual in the senior division.
Congratulations to these students on getting to be a part of such an exciting contest. Thanks to all individuals who had a hand in organizing the contest.
