Vian basketball teams split with Stigler, suffer losses to Howe, Westville
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Vian High School basketball teams had a busy week of action last week with three days worth of games.

The week ended on a somewhat high note as the Vian squads split their home games with Stigler last Friday night at B.J. Traw Gymnasium as the Wolverines won 57-38 over the Panthers after the Lady Wolverines lost 58-45 to the Lady Panthers.

The week got off to a rough start as both Vian teams lost to both Howe squads on Feb. 9 at home and were swept by the host Westville teams on Feb. 10.

On Feb. 9, the Lady Lions tamed the Lady Wolverines 62-23 and the Lions downed the Wolverines 74-55.

On Feb. 10, the Lady Yellowjackets stung the Lady Wolverines 72-20 and the ’Jackets did the same thing to the Wolverines with a 79-68 victory.

In the boys’ win over Stigler, the Wolverines (11-8) led 18-6 after a quarter en route to a 29-11 halftime advantage and a 39-21 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Vian put a quartet of players into double figures, led by Trey Antwine and Trace Sanders with 11 points each and Jeremiah Marshall and Trey Antwine with 10 points apiece. Dee Antwine scored nine points, followed by Masyn Wright with six points, Amos Wright with five points and Dylan Lane with three points.

In the girls’ loss to Stigler, the Lady Panthers took a 13-9 lead after a period, which became a 29-20 halftime advantage and a 41-33 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Halli Russell led the Lady Wolverines (1-17) with 19 points, followed by Olivia Lovell with eight points, Payton Crutchfield with seven points, Rayleigh Terrill and Aliyah Tucker with four points each and Gracie Buttery with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Howe, the Lady Lions roared out to a 20-3 lead after a quarter, which became a 29-7 halftime advantage and a 45-11 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Buttery led Vian with eight points, followed by Russell and Terrill with six points each and Tucker with three points.

In the boys’ loss to Howe, the Wolverines led 12-11 after a quarter and 26-24 at halftime, only to see the Lions outscore them 50-29 in the second half to get the comefrom- behind victory.

In defeat, Masyn Wright scored a gamehigh 18 points and Marshall added 11 points to lead Vian, followed by Sanders and Lane with eight points each, Joe O’Neal with five points, Ledger Folsom with three points and Trey Antwine with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Westville, the Lady Yellowjackets stung the Lady Wolverines with a 23-8 first quarter and just flew on past Vian.

In defeat, Terrill led Vian with 13 points, followed by Buttery with three points and Russell and Crutchfield with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Westville, the Yellowjackets, who trailed 1310 after a quarter, stung the Wolverines with a 24-9 second period to take a 34-22 halftime lead. The Wolverines tried to rally in the second half, but they only outscored the ’Jackets 46-45 as their rally came up short.

In defeat, Masyn Wright scored 17 points and Lane added 15 points to lead Vian, followed by Sanders with eight points, Folsom and Dee Antwine with six points each, Drake with five points, O’Neal with four points, Marshall with three points and Isaiah Owens and Trey Antwine with two points apiece.

After wrapping up the regular season Tuesday with Senior Night games against Westville at B.J. Traw Gymnasium, the Vian teams will begin postseason play by entertaining the Central squads in the Class 2A District Tournament at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
