Vian School Board reorganizes leadership, approves contracts
By AMIE CATO-REMER Editor,

The Vian Board of Education approved a series of routine and personnel-related items during its regular meeting held on March 11, including a reorganization of board leadership, contract approvals and the acceptance of multiple staff resignations.

Following a call to order and routine opening procedures, the board noted there were no patrons present for public comment.

During regular business, board members unanimously approved the reorganization of board officers. The new leadership lineup includes Joe Paul Simon as president, John Ford as vice president and Bill Sanford as clerk. James Thornton and Lee Ann Parks will continue to serve as members.

During the superintendent’s report, Superintendent John Brockman spoke on board member point, the accreditation report , and the board meeting at noon on March 26 regarding bond sales.

The board also unanimously approved the district’s February regular and special meeting minutes, along with financial items including general fund encumbrances totaling $61,964.89.

Several activity fund transfers were also approved, including funds supporting FFA, athletics and student organizations.

In other action, the board approved contracts for the 2026-27 school year with Interquest Detection Canines and the Jenkins and Kemper audit firm. Members also approved a surplus list for the middle school and elementary school libraries.

The board accepted multiple resignations, including paraprofessional Keira Drew, elementary teacher Alyssa Goad, elementary special education teacher Penny Gragg and middle school math teacher Gracy Carson.

Board members entered into executive session to discuss personnel matters and a proposed addendum to the superintendent’s contract, as well as coaching positions.

Upon returning to open session, the board voted to approve the addendum to the superintendent’s contract for the 2025-26 school year.

In new business, Parks led a discussion regarding a dyslexia specialist.

This news story is based on the unofficial minutes from the board meeting and could be in error if the minutes are changed prior to adoption.
